Introduction

Hello, I'm ceramic artist Jo Seo-yeon. I am delighted to be part of the PULBAT Ceramic Project. Although we started off lightly, as we progressed, I found joy in the process of delving deeper and considering the perspective of the users, adding more details to the artwork. It has been a project that has provided me with a pleasant experience.

안녕하세요. 조서연 세라믹 작가입니다. PULBAT 세라믹 프로젝트에 함께하게 되었습니다. 가볍게 시작했지만 진행하면서 더 깊이 또 사용자의 관점에서 고민하면서 작품에 디테일을 더해가는 과정을 통해 저 또한 즐거운 경험이 된 프로젝트인것 같아요.

How did this collaboration come about?

I had the opportunity to meet the PULBAT director through an introduction from the representative of Elys Studio. Upon hearing that they have a great passion for ceramics and were considering creating products, I naturally felt a connection. It was enjoyable to take the first step together towards creating a strong synergy. Furthermore, the values of the PULBAT brand align with a positive outlook that embraces the potential of new craftsmanship, which made the collaboration a seamless process. . 

Q.어떤 계기로 이번 협업이 이뤄지게 되었나요?

일라이스튜디오 대표님 소개로 PULBAT Director님을 만나게 되었습니다. 워낙 도자기를 좋아하셔서 제품을 고민중이시라는 말씀을 듣고 저도 자연스럽게 연을 이어 나가게 된것 같아요. 좋은 시너지를 만들 수 있는 첫 발걸음을 함께하게 되어서 즐겁게 진행한것같습니다. 또한 브랜드 PULBAT의 가치는 새로운 공예의 가능성을 바라보고 있는 긍정성에 맞닿아 함께 협업을 자연스럽게 진행하게 되었습니다.

Please explain the key features and design concept of the collaborative product. I was particularly impressed by the natural handprints left on the ceramic. What inspired you as an artist for this attempt?

I consider ceramics to be an elegant and yet solid domain. Through this collaboration with PULBAT's director, the process of contemplating visual aesthetics and utility that deviates from the conventional norms has expanded into new territory. I believe you will be able to appreciate the essence of "naturalness" and the aesthetic of traditional Korean beauty, which embodies simplicity, refined restraint, and respect for nature. Although implemented in a minimalistic form, the presence of natural handprints brings forth an open-mindedness in the non-conventional aspects of the design. By encountering these subtle traces, you can explore a sensory experience that extends beyond mere form and discover new possibilities.

Q. 협업 제품의 주요 특징과 디자인 콘셉트에 대해 설명해주세요. 또한 세라믹에 흔적이 남은 자연스러운 핸드자국이 인상이 깊어요. 이번 시도는 작가님께 어떠한 영감을 주셨나요?

세라믹은 단단하지만 우아한 영역이라고 생각합니다. 이번 첫 라인을 PULBAT's director님과 함께 진행하면서 기존과는 차별된는 비주얼과 쓰임에 대해 고민하는 과정들이 새로운 영역으로 확장으로 이어진다고 생각합니다. '자연스러움'과

한국의 고전적인 아름다움의 미학, 순박하지만 그안에 정제된 절제와 자연에대한 존중을 보실수 있을꺼라 생각합니다. 

미니멀한 형태로 구현을 하였지만 자연스럽게 손자국의 흔적들을 보면, 형식에 얽매이지 않는 형태적인 부분에서도 열려있는 생각과 시야를 표현하면서 또다른쓰임에 대한 감각을 만나보실수 있습니다.

How did you artistically express the brand's products? Did this collaboration bring about new synergies or changes between the two fields? 

I believe the artistic expression lies in the traces left by handwork. Ultimately, it was about capturing the reverence for craftsmanship, as it is created by human hands. Through this collaboration, I had the opportunity to explore cultural aspects and delve into expanded philosophical dimensions, resulting in an intriguing experience. Throughout the collaborative process, I learned the importance of respect and consideration for each other's opinions and working methods, aligning with the brand's values of fair collaboration. I am delighted to be a part of PULBAT's ceramic division, which holds various charms.

Q. 작가님은 브랜드 제품을 어떻게 아트적으로 표현하셨나요?  이번 협업을 통해 두 분야 간의 
     새로운 시너지나 변화가 있었나요?

'아트적이다'라는 부분은 손에의한 흔적이라고 생각합니다. 결국은 사람이 만들기에 그 수작업에 대한 존경을 담아내는게 의의였던것 같아요.이번 긴호흡을 통해 문화적인 측면과 확장된 철학적인 부분을 더해 흥미로운 경험을 한 것 같습니다. 협업의 과정에서도 서로의 의견과 일하는 방식에 대해 존중과 배려를 중시하는 브랜드사의 이념에 따라 공정한 협업에 대하여  배우게된 계기가 되었습니다. 다양한 매력을 가진 PULBAT의 세라믹 파트에 함께하게 되어서 기쁩니다. 

Q. 

What new attempts or changes were made? And what was the most challenging aspect during the collaboration? 

Through this project, I realized that there is a possibility for a broader perspective and expansion in terms of new applications. These changes might also influence my future works. One of the most challenging aspects during the process was testing the pigments, which took longer than expected. Factors such as temperature, heat resistance, and the behavior of different pigments posed significant concerns, but through various attempts, I was able to achieve stabilized colors, which I consider fortunate. Overcoming these challenges together with the PULBAT team was an enjoyable experience. Moving forward, I aspire to continue exploring diverse approaches not only in this line but also in future product lines.

Q. 어떤 새로운 시도나 변화가 있었나요?  혹은 협업 중 가장 도전적이었던 부분은 어떤 것이었나요? 

새로운 쓰임에 대한 시각이 이번 프로젝트를 진행하면서 다른 관점으로도 확장될 수 있다는 가능성을 보게된 것 같아요. 이런 변화들로 인해 제 작품에 대한 다음 작업들도 반영될수 있을것 같아요. 진행하면서 도전적이였던 부분은  안료에 대해 테스트 하는 과정이 생각보다 오래 걸린 것 같습니다. 온도와 발열점과 안료마다의 상태에 따라서 달리 연출되는 부분들이 크게 고민이 되었지만 다양한 시도를 통해 안정화된 색감으로 표현되어 다행이라고 생각합니다. 이런 일련의 과정들 또한 PULBAT팀과 재미있게 극복하게 된것같아요. 앞으로도 이번라인뿐만아니라 다음 라인제품도 더 다양한 시도들로 만들어가고 싶습니다.

What message did you want to convey through this collaboration with the brand? 

Through discussions and sharing of ideas with PULBAT's director, I created artworks while contemplating the balance between user convenience and design in terms of functionality. Touching the nature of soil connects to the ideology of life and existence. We transform the greatness and value produced by nature into forms that humans can utilize through various interactions. Ultimately, as humans living in nature, it seems that naturalness becomes the most significant aspect. The goal was to create a diverse and minimalistic look through the rawness, roughness, and serendipitous traces. Therefore, I hope that those who look at the artworks can touch and experience the texture of those traces, serving as a starting point towards embracing naturalness. 

Q 작가님은 이번 협업을 통해 브랜드와 함께 어떤 메시지를 전달하고 싶으셨나요? 

PULBAT'S 디렉터님과 이념과 생각을 함께 나누면서 기능적인 부분에서 사용자의 편리성과 디자인의 균형을 고민하며 작품을 만들었습니다. 흙의 성질을 만지면 생명과 존재라는 이념에 연결로 이여집니다. 자연이 만들어내는 위대함과 가치를 여러 상호작용을 통해 사람이 쓸 수 있는 형태로의 변화를 만들어 냅니다. 그 본질은 결국 우리도 자연 속에 살아하는 사람이기에 자연스러움이 가장 큰 부분이 될것같아요. 날것의 거침과 우연성에 만들어지는 다양한 흔적들로 보다 다양성과 미니멀한 룩을 만들어 내는것이 목표였던것 같아요. 따라서 작품을 바라보는 이들이 더 그 흔적들의 매무새를 만져보면서 자연스러움에 다가가는 시발점이 되었으면 합니다.

Are there any more collaborations planned for the future? Are you considering collaborating with artists or designers from other fields? 

I would like to continue working together on diverse, interesting, and enjoyable projects in the future. It would be great to see more vibrant lines in the next artwork. I also feel that I need to put in more effort to gain inspiration. I would like to express my gratitude to the PULBAT team for providing me with this wonderful opportunity and for having a long-lasting collaboration. Thank you! :)

Q. 미래에 더 많은 협업이 예정되어 있나요? 다른 분야의 아티스트나 디자이너와의 협업을 고려하고 계신가요?

앞으로도 다양하고 흥미롭고 즐거운 작업을 함께 연장해 나가고 싶어요. 다음 작품에는 보다 색이 가득한 라인도 나오면 좋지 않을까 생각됩니다. 저도 영감을 얻기 위해 더 많은 노력을 해야 할 것 같습니다 함께 긴 시간 호흡하며 좋은 기회를 주신 PULBAT팀에게도 감사의 인사를 드리고 싶어요!:)
