아름다움이 오래가려면, 1600년의 시간이 담긴 한지는 지금까지 우리 선조들이 쌓아온 고집스런 1600년의 시간이 담겨져 있습니다. 한지는 닥나무를 채취해 찌는 ‘닥무지’ 과정을 거쳐 껍질을 벗기고 백피를 만들고, 잿물을 만들어 닥섬유를 삶고 두드리기, 닥풀 만들기, 지료와 닥풀 섞기, 물질하기, 탈수하기, 건조하기, 도침하기 등 20여 공정을 거쳐 완성됩니다. 수백번의 손을 거처 만들어진다하여 백지라고도 하며, 물과 불, 잿물과 황촉규액(닥풀) 등 조화롭게 담은 자연 재료와 사람, 그리고 천연기법으로 완성되는 성질로 지속가능한 소재라고도 합니다. 표면에 자연스러운 닥나무의 섬유질은 손상되지 않고 그대로 남겨져 두께가 얇아도 질겨 강도가 높고 보존성이 좋은 종이입니다. 자연그대로의 따뜻하고 포근한 질감을 내어 어느공간에도 편안하고 섬세하게 다양한 삶의 공간안에 어우러집니다. Hanji — 1,600 Years of Stubborn Craft and Timeless Integrity Hanji, traditional Korean paper, carries within its fibers over sixteen centuries of dedication and cultural heritage. Meticulously handcrafted through more than 20 precise steps, the process begins with harvesting the dak tree (paper mulberry), steaming it in the “dakmuji” stage, peeling the bark to obtain the baekpi (white inner bark), and continues through natural lye production, fiber boiling, pounding, preparation of dakpul (natural mucilage), mixing, sheet formation, dehydration, drying, and surface polishing (dochim). Because it passes through countless hands and processes, it is sometimes poetically called baekji—“the hundred-times paper.” Formed from a harmonious blend of natural elements—water, fire, lye, and mucilage from Hibiscus manihot—hanji is a fully sustainable material, grounded in natural resources and traditional, chemical-free methods.
